Wanda Hamilton Atkinson, cherished wife and mother, 67, passed away at her home in Surfside Beach on Thursday, April 05, 2018.
Born and raised in Conway, SC, Wanda was the daughter of the late Pauline and James Hamilton and the eldest of five children.
A lifelong lover of education, Wanda always kept her mind busy and was a beloved teacher for more than 25 years. A valedictorian of Conway High School and an alumna of Furman University, she was exceptionally intelligent with an amazing mind for statistics; especially when it came to sports, particularly her South Carolina Gamecocks. Wanda never met a stranger, never missed an opportunity to send a card or a chance to play bunco. She was incredibly thoughtful and a beacon of positivity.
She is survived by her daughter, Lori Atkinson Black and son-in-law, John Black of Dallas, TX, and son, Jeremy Atkinson of Surfside Beach. She is also survived by her siblings, Mike Hamilton of Wichita, KS, Sandra Wisener of Myrtle Beach, and Terry Hamilton of Conway. She is predeceased by her husband Danny Atkinson of Myrtle Beach and her sister Annette Hamilton Ard of Conway.
A service will be held at Burroughs Funeral Home on Sunday, April 8th at 3 pm, with visitation beginning at 2 pm. A graveside service will follow the ceremony at Ocean Woods Cemetery in Myrtle Beach.

Omg, I just accidentally happened onto this obituary and am devastated. I worked at GTE for many years and Wanda and I met when she worked as an operator one summer. It was the summer before she and Danny were married. She was teaching at Woodlawn Park at the time. I was a bridesmaid in her's an Danny's wedding. Wanda was an amazing soul and I will never forget her. I am so sorry for those of you left behind. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. Fly high with the angels, Wanda. Until we meet again.....

I have had the privilege of not only working with Wanda at Forestbrook, but I was one of her Bunco buddies, too. Wanda was bright, witty, smart and kind. We will miss her terribly.

Remembering Wanda when she taught at Forestbrook Elementary School. Dedicated and devoted to the children she taught each year. Willing to share her teaching expertise, knowledge of how children learn, and teaching materials as we planned each week together. Laughed together as she kept me straight about when I was celebrating my own anniversary and my husband's birthday because I, for some reason, always forgot. She would always send cards to remind me so I could feel like a hero. A heart of gold. Angels will surround you always, Wanda. May you Rest In Peace. Kate McCarthy
