George Dewey Evatt, Jr., 73 of Surfside Beach, SC, formerly of Clinton, SC, died at home on June 23, 2018 after a short battle with cancer. He was born January 19, 1945 to the late George Dewey Evatt, Sr. and Alice Jean Gray Evatt of Gray Court, SC.
As a Boy Scout in Gray Court, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and received the national defense service medal, armed forces expeditionary medal, good conduct medal and driver badge with bar. His formal education included a BA from Mars Hill College and a Masters Degree in Education from Furman University. He became a memorable life-long teacher of history and geography, mostly in Laurens School District 56.
He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church in Clinton, SC. In addition to teaching, George enjoyed spending time with his extended family, gardening, farming and helping fellow plant lovers from his greenhouse business in Clinton from 1990 until 2007. George's family and friends will long remember his terrific sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Diana Waters Evatt, of the home, daughters Margie Evatt Hoffman of Myrtle Beach and Rosie Evatt (Zack Brewer) of Simpsonville. Also surviving are his granddaughters Abby Hoffman and Victoria Sloan, both of Myrtle Beach. He is also survived by a sister, Susan (Mark) Stringfellow of Gadsden, Alabama.
A celebration of George's birth and life will be held on Surfside Beach, SC in January 2019.

I was a student teacher with Mr. Evatt and he was always so good to me.He was very supportive and encouraging.
