Marvin L. Chavis, 93, died Tuesday January 2, 2018 at his home in Murrells Inlet. He was born March 15, 1924 in Camden, SC the son of the late Lonnie Chavis and Mary Lowrimore Chavis. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. at Paris Island in 1943 and in the Merchant Marines in 1944 and 1945. He attended Navigation school in Charleston in 1950. For 38 years he was employed by Westvaco.
He and his late wife Margaret Carrigg Chavis retired to Murrells Inlet where he spent his time on his favorite hobby, fishing. He was a Charter member of the Murrells Inlet American Legion and loved Country Music.
Marvin was pre-deceased by his brother, Curtis Chavis and his sons, John Bowman Chavis and Vernon Del Chavis. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Chavis Eaddy of Murrells Inlet and his son, Marvin L. Chavis, Jr. of John’s Island, 12 Grandchildren and 25 Great-Grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Burroughs Funeral Home on Old Kings Highway in Murrells Inlet on Saturday January 6, 2018 from 1pm to 3pm.
In leu of flowers, donations can be given to Waccamaw Animal Rescue Mission (WARM); 3110 Barnfield Rd, Conway, SC 29526.
