Irene Hanson

Irene Marcella Hanson, age 86, passed away with her loving family by her side at her home in Murrells Inlet on Feb. 27th, 2018. She was born on September 1st, 1931 in Hastings, North Dakota

A loving wife and mother of 6, she is survived by her husband William A. Hanson Sr., and children William A. Hanson Jr., Kathleen M. Hanson, Diana J. Dalakas, David N. Hanson, and Mark A. Hanson. Her daughter Holly G. Hanson passed away at the tender age of 10 months on Sept. 6th, 1962. She returns home to the Lord to be with her parents Albin Kasper Korbel and Marie Blaha Korbel, her sister Dorothy M. Johnson, brother Edward Korbel, and her daughter Holly.

She grew up during the great depression of the 30’s. Her father was the local School Master and she would walk through the cold North Dakota winters to school in Geneseo and Goodrich. She graduated High School in 1949 from Anamoose High School, then attended North Dakota State University where she majored in Home Economics and played on the woman’s Varsity softball team.

She met her husband William while attending North Dakota State, and had to sneak out for their second date. She was attracted to his 1949 Harley Davidson Cruise motorcycle, and they would ride together throughout North Dakota. They would take turns driving the bike, and she soon became an avid rider.

They dated a few years before getting married at St. Mary’s Cathedral on June 2nd, 1951. They started out in a small trailer home, and Irene worked at Fargo Glass & Paint while William graduated North Dakota State with a BA in Mechanical Engineering. As the family grew, Irene would take care of the family and loved to tend to her garden and shrubs. The family moved to various places to accommodate William’s position at Westinghouse and the family size. Irene devoted herself as a housewife until her children were grown. They lived most of their lives in Severna Park, and were well known members of the community.

During the 80’s she became an Entrepreneur and owned a full service beauty Salon called Body L’Affaire in Severna Park, MD. She worked as a manicurist and was responsible for 10 employees.

She enjoyed playing the piano, sewing, quilting, cooking, canning, picnics, gardening, and computer games. She was active in the Severna Park PTA, Booster Mothers, and worked for the Millersville Police Department as a Crossing Guard. She packaged and delivered food in the Emergency Food Program, and helped relocate abused women.
She received multiple awards while with the Millersville Police Department. She enjoyed her work, and cherished the children she watched over as a Crossing Guard.

She retired in 1993 and moved to Murrells Inlet, SC in the summer of 1997. While in SC, she enjoyed her long deserved retirement. Her favorite restaurants were the Texas Roadhouse and Gulf Stream in Garden City. She frequented Brookgreen Gardens, Huntington Beach, and many of our local events and shows. She enjoyed tending to her garden and fish pond, and as her illness progressed, she was confined more to playing her computer games which she excelled at.

She was a devoted Catholic who was active in church activities at St. Johns the Evangelist in Severna Park, MD. She sewed beautiful vestments for Father Messer and Father Riley during the 60’s & 70’s. She always enjoyed Father Riley’s fiery speeches during mass. A Holly tree was planted near the exit on the church grounds when her daughter Holly passed. She attended St. Michael’s Church while here in Garden City until she was no longer able due to health. She survived many of life’s wonders, adventures, joys and hardships.

The credit my mother deserves is more than can be properly summarized. She will be terribly missed by all… How can the sum total of a person’s life be adequately documented?
