Robert “Bob” Elwood Krom passed peacefully at his vacation home in Murrells Inlet, SC on Tuesday, May 29 at the age of 83, with his wife, Sue, at his bedside. Bob succumbed from complications of his three-and-a-half-year battle with bladder cancer.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, M. Sue Krom of York, PA; his sons: Mark Krom of Murrells Inlet, SC and Kevin Krom of Fairfax, VA, and his daughter Jodi Herman of Gansevoort, NY; daughter-in-law, Mary Diesel Krom (Kevin) of Fairfax, VA, and son-in-law, Michael Herman (Jodi) of Gansevoort, NY; and grandchildren: Will Krom, Caroline Krom of Fairfax, VA, and Jack Herman, Peter Herman, and Elizabeth Herman of Gansevoort, NY; sisters: Jane Davis of Taneytown, MD, Audrey Gist of Westminster, MD, Barbara Dell of Westminster, MD, and brother, Paul Krom of McSherrystown, PA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Ruth Krom of Union Bridge, MD; and his brother, Roy Krom of Westminster, MD.
Bob was born on August 24, 1934 in Hanover, PA to Franklin and Ruth Krom. He was a member of the 1953 graduating class of Westminster (MD) High School. He served our country in the U.S. Army from 1956-58. After the military, Bob joined his uncle George Strevig’s plumbing company in Littlestown, PA where he began his lifelong career as a plumber, pipefitter, and HVAC technician. He applied his expertise/trade at York, PA-based service providers: Shipley Humble (1963-1970), CC Kottcamp & Sons (1970-1994), and Bortner Brothers until he retired in 1999. In 1959, he met his beloved Sue at a lunch spot in Littlestown, PA where he finally got up enough courage to ask her out after visiting the diner daily for a couple of weeks. Sue claims she knew Bob “was the one” when he removed his suit coat to quickly and skillfully change a flat tire on their first date. On April 9, 1960, they married at Oak View Baptist Church in Codorus, PA. Bob and Sue remained members of Oak View Baptist until joining Temple Baptist Church (Leaders Heights, PA) in 1974…and then St. Paul’s (Wolf’s Church) ECC (York, PA) in 1985. From 1960-1966, the couple welcomed two sons and a daughter into their home. The family resided in Lake Codorus, PA from 1960-1966…then lived on Shaffer’s Church Road in Niemans, PA until moving to their current residence on West Market Street in York, PA in 1984. In 2006, they took possession of their Myrtle Beach-area condo at Tupelo Bay Golf Villas where they loved to vacation (and winter), and host family and friends. Bob loved his “Myrtle Beach” condo!
Bob was an extremely talented technical service technician. Family, friends, and co-workers claim that “Bob can fix anything!”...and he often did for countless family members and friends. Half of Bob’s family had their boilers and/or air conditioning systems installed by him, mostly at just the cost of the equipment and parts. He also looked after Miller Properties’ 52 unit apartment holdings as Technical Services Property Manager for nearly 17 years. When he wasn’t knee deep in plumbing supplies and HVAC parts, Bob loved to tinker around in his well-appointed workshop. He was also an avid golfer, enjoying membership at Bon Aire Country Club and playing most of the courses in the York County area (including the Senior Golf League at Briarwood Country Club)…and many of the courses in Myrtle Beach. Bob was a long-time member of the Moose Club and Vikings Club (York, PA)
Bob’s family will remember him as a loving and devoted husband; a proud, generous, supportive, but disciplined father; and an “overly generous” and doting grandfather. Bob was a kind, respectful, and selfless friend to many people, never saying “no” to a friend in need. He was known for his wry sense of humor, especially “pulling your leg” with a straight face!
A Celebration of Life & Memorial service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, June 16 at St. Paul’s (Wolf’s Church) ECC in York, PA. A luncheon/visitation will be held afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Margaret Moul Home for Cerebral Palsy at 2050 Barley Rd, York, PA 17408 or to St. Paul’s (Wolf’s Church) ECC at 4501 Wolfs Church Rd, York, PA 17408. Condolences can be sent to his wife, Sue, at 4170 W Market St, York, PA 17408 or to email@example.com.
