Joyce Hughes Elder, 81, passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 3, 2018 at Prince George Healthcare Center in Georgetown, South Carolina. She was born on January 24, 1937 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina to the late Jesse & Annie Powell Hughes.
Along with her parents, Joyce is reunited with her first husband, Gordon L. Brett; her second husband, James T. Elder; her sister, Carolynn Marshall; brothers, Wesley, Remear, Alton, & Thurmon Hughes & RJ Davis; her sister, Corrine Eaddy; and her beloved infant daughter, Sara Elizabeth.
A Murrells Inlet Native, Joyce was graduate of Winyah High School, Class of 1955. She was a successful business owner for over 10 years and went on to manage several local businesses until her retirement. In her free time, Joyce loved to collect brass candle sticks and express her extensive creativity by arranging silk flowers. Joyce took pride in making flower arrangements to place on the final resting places of family and friends in local cemeteries. She will forever be remembered for her love of the Inlet, and her unconditional love of her family.
Left to cherish Joyce’s memory are her sons, Guy Brett and his wife, Stephanie Brett of Myrtle Beach & Neal Brett and his fiancée, Nicki Roloff of Garden City; her grandchildren, Mason Brett, Holden Brett, Kristen Elise Scolari, Erica Scolari, Hunter Morris & Ivy McCormick; her brother, Pastor Clark Hughes and his wife, Pastor Betty Hughes of Isle of Palms; her sister in- law, Susan B. Goodwin of Massachusetts; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, a large, loving, extended family and many supportive friends and neighbors.
A Celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on Tuesday July 10, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Belin United Methodist Church, 4182 US-17 BUS, Murrells Inlet, SC 29576. Inurnment in the church columbarium will follow immediately after the service.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks memorial contributions be made in Joyce’s name to the charity of one’s choice.

Impossible to squeeze a lifetime of memories into a few short sentences. Joyce, you were a part of so many lives. Yours was a life very well lived and despite our wonderful memories, you will be so missed. Love you sis!

Love and sympathy to Joyce's family. She was a dear, sweet lady, and we shared many good times in our young years. She was truly a Murrells Inlet lady. When she returned to the Inlet from "the north," she really dug her feet into her home country! She truly came home.
