James G. Long



James G. Long, 74, of Surfside Beach, passed away with his devoted wife by his side, Thursday February 9th, 2017 at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet. He was born in Monroe, North Carolina on January 13th 1943 to the late Clarence Hoyt and Mary Ann (Yow) Long.

James is preceded in death by his brother, Richard Long, formerly of Monroe, North Carolina.

James was a Sea Man in the United States Army. After suffering an injury during Vietnam, James returned to the states and started his family. Following his retirement from the Military, James became a Sales Representative with Glidden Paint Company and started a small business selling golf shirts at the Hudson Flea Market. When he wasn’t working, James could be found traveling, reading, fishing, and wood carving. His true passion however, was his family. James loved and adored his children and his grandchildren.

Left to cherish James’ memory is his wife of 53 years, Vivian. With her, they raised their two children, James Michael Long, and Jacqueline Brewer Long Stevens and her husband, Clark, both of Clayton, North Carolina. His grandchildren, Brendan, Rhett, Landon and Luke Stevens; his brother, David Long of NC; his sister, Sarah Frances Shrader of NC, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

A Visitation for James will take place at McEwen Funeral Home, (204 S Main St, Monroe, NC 28112) 1:00PM to 2:00PM on Sunday February 12th, 2017 with a Memorial Service at 2PM.

A Beach Side Memorial will take place Tuesday February 14th 2017 at 4:00PM at 11th Ave South, Surfside Beach, SC.
